Brisbane premiership winning trainer Barry Baldwin strongly believes the key factor to Burdekin Blues continuing to win races in impressive times is a good track.
“I’ve been saying all the time that he’s a fairly promising horse and the only thing that was bugbearing him before was the wet tracks,” he said.
A good track at Eagle Farm on Saturday, August 8 provided Burdekin Blues (G4 Sequalo-Winsome Blue) with an all the way win in the Parups Waring Architecture QTIS Class 6 Plate 1200m.
Heading in as $1.35 race favourite and ridden by Michael Cahill, the gelding began quickly and got straight to the front.
Down the home run he stretched away to win four and a half lengths in front of Sashenka (Bobby El-Issa).
Pride of Power (Ric McMahon) followed in a third by three quarters of a length.
As Baldwin points out Burdekin Blues has only had three starts on good tracks. He has won them all.
The first was his Maiden in early March at the Gold Coast where he won by three and a quarter lengths in a time of 1-09.73.
His second good track was at Toowoomba where he ran nearly a track record at 58.47 winning by three and a half lengths and finally Saturday’s run where he went 1-09.
“He’s definitely better on a good track,” said Baldwin.
Burdekin Blues has also claimed two other wins, both by commanding margins, including one 10 days prior to this latest win where he romped home to win by nine lengths.
Baldwin was confident the gelding could handle racing again after such a big win. “That’s the first time we’ve backed him up that quick and that once again was a good track,” he said.
His nine starts now include five wins, two seconds, a third and a fourth amassing $159,550 in prizemoney, including $45,800 in QTIS bonuses.
Baldwin and owner Tom Sheahan purchased Burdekin Blues for about $42,500 at the Magic Millions sales.
“We are very happy,” said Baldwin.
“He’ll go for a spell when he comes back he’ll have a start in Queensland and then most probably will have a crack at the Autumn carnival in Melbourne.”
