Queensland Racing Industry Awards 2007

Queensland Horse of the Year – Gold Edition
Sponsored by Brisbane Turf Club

The Ron Maund-trained wonder filly Gold Edition cracked her first Group 1 victory taking out the Ascot Vale at Flemington with Queensland jockey Jim Byrne in the saddle. In total the filly claimed eight Black Type races for the season plus the $1M Magic Millions 3YO Trophy. She also ran second in a further three Group 1 races for the season.

Jim Atkins Trainer of the Year – Ron Maund

Toowoomba trainer Ron Maund has been awarded the Jim Atkins Trainer of the Year for the second time. There is no doubt that Ron is regarded as a top trainer not only in Queensland but in Australia and last season proved that when his horses won 12 Stakes races around the country. This includes eight Group races and besides winning the Group 1 Ascot Vale Stakes in Melbourne, he also won the Group 2 Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm with Gold Edition.

George Moore Jockey of the Year – Stathi Katsidis

Stathi Katsidis has been awarded the prestigious George Moore Jockey of the Year.  Stathi is getting a reputation as a big race jockey and even though he has battled with weight and illness problems last season he has been able to win eight Stakes races, including four a Group level. His highlight was riding the Kelly Schweida trained mare Nova Star in the Group 1 Winter Stakes on Tattersall’s day.

Ken Russell Apprentice of the Year – Ric McMahon

For the second time apprentice Ric McMahon has claimed the Ken Russell Apprentice of the Year award. Not only did Ric win the Brisbane Metropolitan Apprentice title last season with 29 wins, he also regularly travelled to Sydney to ride for leading trainer John Hawkes.

Champion Stallion – Lion Hunter
Sponsored by TBQA

For the third time in a row Lion Hunter has been named the Champion Stallion. His loss to the Queensland breeding industry will be missed with his remaining crops continuing to show great form in Australia and overseas.
One of his best performers for the 2006/07 season was Toowoomba filly Gold Edition.

SEQ Metropolitan & Provincial Trainer of the Year – Bryan Guy

The SEQ Metropolitan and Provincial Trainer of the Year, sponsored by IPG Print was awarded to Gold Coast trainer Bryan Guy who finished with 87 wins last season. Bryan took out the Brisbane Metropolitan Premiership for the first time and his best performance was with Lasoron who won the Group 3 Doomben Roses during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

SEQ Metropolitan & Provincial Jockey of the Year – Glen Colless

Sky Channel presented the SEQ Metropolitan and Provincial Jockey of the Year, which was won by Glen Colless. Glen tied with Jim Byrne on the number of winners with 102, however won the award on a count back with second placings. One highlight for the year includes winning the Listed Australia Post Stakes with Jack Denham’s horse Isurava.

SEQ Metropolitan & Provincial Apprentice of the Year – Mandy Radecker

The SEQ Metropolitan and Provincial Apprentice of the Year, presented by Cooper Grace Ward, was awarded to Mandy Radecker who rode the most winners in the SEQ metropolitan and provincial area as an apprentice. She is under the care of Deagon trainer Pat Duff and one highlight last season was riding a treble in the city last August (2006).

Non SEQ Provincial & Country Horse of the Year – Rock of Mufasa

The Non SEQ Provincial and Country Horse of the Year, proudly sponsored by Queensland Country Life, went to Rock of Mufasa. There would not be a more consistent horse racing in north Queensland than Rock of Mufasa, who last season was trained by Darren Jefferies at Rockhampton.

 Non SEQ Provincial & Country Trainer of the Year – Roy Chillemi

North Queensland trainer Roy Chillemi is a multiple winner of the Non SEQ Provincial and Country Trainer of the Year. Roy has trained 94 winners this season in North Queensland with a Townsville meeting very rarely going by without the trainer’s name appearing more than once on the winners list.
Twice this season at Townsville he has trained four winners on the program but more astonishing he has twice trained five winners on a Townsville program.

Country Award Winners

Non SEQ Provincial & Country Jockey of the Year – Adrian Coome

Adrian Coome has managed to ride 99 winners as an apprentice this season in the northern provincial and country area, in doing so managed out ride his fully fledged colleagues. Along the way he managed to ride four winners at a single Rockhampton meeting, won a Rockhampton Tattersall’s Cup aboard Delicata; won the Townsville Lightning partnering Saint Sebastian but his biggest win for the season was teaming up with Nediym’s Image in the Rockhampton Newmarket.

Non SEQ Provincial & Country Apprentice of the Year – Adrian Coome

The Non SEQ Provincial and Country Apprentice of the Year, presented by Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club, was awarded to Adrian Coome who last season won an incredible 115 winners in Queensland. Adrian is under the care of Don Critch at Rockhampton and regularly makes the trip to Brisbane to ride.

Champion QTIS Two-Year-Old – Mimi Lebrock

This year’s Champion QTIS Two-Year-Old, presented by The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail, has been awarded to Mimi Lebrock. The daughter of Show a Heart won over $600,000 last season with the Bart Cummings-trained filly’s biggest win being the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

Champion QTIS Three-Year-Old – Gold Edition

Media Monitors proudly presented the Champion QTIS Three-Year-Old award to Toowoomba filly Gold Edition. The deeds of this super filly has been widely recognised with the total prizemoney won exceeding over $2M last season.

QROA Best Four-Year-Old and Up – Nova Star

The Tattersall’s Club Best Four-Year-Old and Up, which was judged by the Queensland Racehorse Owners’ Association, was this year awarded to Nova Star. She won over half a million dollars in prizemoney last season and before giving her trainer Kelly Schweida his first Group 1 victory she took out the Group 2 QTC Cup at Eagle Farm.

Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion – Show a Heart

The Champion Two-Year-Old Stallion, presented by Ballandean Estate Wines, was awarded to Show a Heart, who stands at Glenlogan Park Stud. His total two-year-old earnings for last season was over $800,000, with his best performer being Mimi Lebrock who won the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

Champion First Season Stallion – Falvelon

The Champion First Season Stallion Award, which this year was sponsored by XXXX Gold, was won by Falvelon who also stands at Glenlogan Park Stud. Falvelon finished fifth on the Australian First Season Sire list, with his progeny amassing well over half a million dollars in prizemoney. One highlight for the year includes Keiki winning the Group 2 Champagne Classic at Doomben during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Champion Broodmare – Filnova

This year’s Champion Broodmare Award was sponsored by Absolute Promotions & Embroidery and was won by Filanova, the dam of the Kelly Schweida-trained mare Nova Star, who won three Black Type races during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, including the Group 1 Winter Stakes.

Longest Priced Winner - Voltaat
Sponsored by Paddock Bookmakers’ Association

The Paddock Bookmakers’ Association Award for Longest Priced Winner in south east Queensland was this year was won by Voltaat, who won a maiden race at the Gold Coast last February at a starting price of $71. He was ridden by Todd Pannell and trained by Anthony Schumacher.

“Highpoint” Farrier Award – Christopher McMullen
Sponsored by Queensland Master Farriers’ Association

The Queensland Master Farriers’ Association’s “Highpoint” Farrier Award, which is determined by a points system during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival, was awarded to Christopher McMullen. Christopher has been in the industry for over 20 years and some of the horses he shod during the winter carnival were Group 1 winners Bentley Biscuit and Empires Choice.

Best Strapper – Tammy Blair

The Best Strapper presented by the Queensland Racehorse Owners’ Association, was awarded to Tammy Blair who strapped the Brian Smith-trained horses Scattergun and Bikkie Tin Blues during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Best Media Award – “Life at a gallop” by Michael Crutcher, The Courier-Mail

The Best Media Award relating to racing in Queensland was won by Michael Crutcher for his story entitled Life at a gallop, profiling trainer Barry Baldwin. The article appeared in The Courier-Mail’s Q Confidential.
